Bengaluru, Sep 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Karnataka State Cabinet has approved several key decisions, including the revival of student union elections in colleges and universities across the state from the 2026-27 academic year, an aerospace policy and an employment incentive scheme.
.Speaking at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara provided details of the decisions.
The Cabinet approved the resumption of student elections in colleges and universities with the objective of fostering leadership, responsibility and democratic values among students.
“Student elections had been banned in colleges earlier for various reasons. We have now decided to resume them. The system will be implemented from the 2026-27 academic year. However, no political party or organisation will be allowed to campaign on campuses,” Parameshwara said.
The Cabinet has also approved the distribution of 15 lakh residential sites to economically weaker sections across the state. It has been decided to allocate 50,000 sites in each district.
The distribution of sites will be carried out in three phases across Karnataka. Around five lakh sites will be distributed in September, while another five lakh sites each will be distributed during the second and third phases, Parameshwara said.
He further stated that Karnataka is facing a severe drought this year, with 101 talukas already declared drought-affected based on the Centre’s 2020 drought manual. Another 50 talukas are likely to be declared soon, followed by further assessments, he added. Last year, 223 talukas were declared drought-affected, but the situation is worse this year, and potentially all talukas could be covered. The state will submit memorandums to the Centre seeking financial support, including a possible waiver of farmers’ loans. The government has attributed the severe situation partly to the El Nino impact. An all-party delegation may also visit Delhi to seek assistance from the Centre.
“Karnataka Aerospace Policy 2026 to 31 has been approved. This is in order to encourage industries related to aerospace technologies. Some subsidy component has been introduced in focused areas and also non-focused areas. I’m not going to share the details, but just in principle, a policy has been brought about, 26 to 31. Bengaluru already has a programme to manufacture fighter aircraft under Tejas Advanced Systems, and also HAL is manufacturing 97 light combat aircrafts. All this certainly will be helped by the government in terms of the policy and providing subsidy components," he stated.
“Number two, a programme has been announced to build houses near the workplace, which is called Shramika Nivas. Some 10,000 houses are targeted in the first place. We will ask the companies and industries to build these housing facilities. The government will promote these industries and give them support and subsidies, etc. it is for all industries,” Parameshwara stated.
“In order to encourage industries in the most backward and backward talukas, the government will support those industries on the basis of their investment: backward class up to 10 per cent, most backward class up to 20 per cent.”
Industries related to aerospace, defence, automobile industry, electric vehicles, electronic vehicles, semiconductors, etc. All these industries will be promoted in these areas and will be promoted to improve those talukas,” he stated.
